"Fashionable""is not just a word tailor-made for the fashion industry. The role of an interior designer is like the tailor in the fashion industry. We both mix-and-match the standard materials to provide a unique style and perspective. As an interior designer, our job is to help houses put on new, tailor-made "clothes"" with their own characteristics. Also, providing a look into the owners style.
Before we tailor-make "clothes" for the house, we need to understand the owner's personality, insights and charisma to provide the best outcome. Our new project "Greenview Terrace" is helping a female owner who is passionate about designer brand furniture and has an eye for high quality. Although this owner is young, she knows what she needs and has a keen eye for high quality. She's looking for our help to change her 704 sq ft apartment into a modern, fashion living space with an emphasis on quality.
Dealing with designer brand furniture, we have to understand their characteristics. They usaully have a sharper visual appearance and contain more detail than the industry standard. In order to balance the visual aspect of the apartment, we use colour and lines to neutralise the sharpness within the space.
In terms of colour usage, the furniture chosen by the owner are mainly in natural wooden colour, with a pinch of vintage feeling. For example, the wooden entertainment console in the living room and the dining room sideboard with the same colour tone. In order for the quality furniture to stand out, we tailor-made "a cloth" with a minimalist and flexible design in mind. We choose white as the main colour and added equal amounts of feature and accents in grey, charcoal, rose gold and black colours. Our goal is to make a flexible frame for the owner to change to a different style of furniture easier at any time; but still maintaining harmony through design.
In terms of line elements, some designer brand furniture contains strong look and lines, for example the assorted sideboard in the dinning area is full of character and layers but at the same time, the amount of sharp angles is quite large. We soften the visual effect by applying a smooth curved edge design in other furniture, for example the ceiling height storage cabinet on the left hand side of the entrance has a curly and streamline edge instead of a sharp, 90 degree edge. Also, the kitchen island on the right hand side of the entrance is using the same idea to soften the area. Visually, curved lines make the space looks bigger and more comfortable. This smooth streamlined design also adds a fashionable atmosphere to the space.
We also apply the curvy streamline design to the ceiling. We didn't use traditional methods to make the ceiling. Instead, we used a false ceiling only in the kitchen, following the curved edges of the kitchen island. This false ceiling creates an extra layer of complexity in the apartment, giving more dimension throughout the space The difference in ceiling height create an effect that the living room has a taller ceiling. Sometimes you don't need to always have a complex design, having simplicity in mind can also be elegant.
Like other designs, the interior design aspect should be aesthetically appealing and also flexible. With a keen grasp of design and practicality, so that each design element can better represent the uniqueness of each home owner.
